Landscape Technician

Position Overview

Sherman Library & Gardens is seeking two (2) Part-Time Landscape Technicians to support the daily care, maintenance, and presentation of our world-renowned botanical gardens and grounds. This position plays an important role in preserving the beauty, health, and visitor experience of the Gardens through a variety of horticultural, landscape, and groundskeeping responsibilities.

The ideal candidate is dependable, safety-conscious, enjoys working outdoors, and has a passion for horticulture, gardening, or landscape maintenance.

Schedule

• Part-Time Position
• Approximately 24 hours per week
• Scheduled to work four (4) six-hour shifts per week
• Schedule may vary based on operational needs and employee availability
• Weekend availability is required; employees must be available to work either Saturday or Sunday each week
• Additional hours may be available during special events, seasonal projects, or peak visitor periods

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The duties listed below are representative of the work performed by this position and are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all responsibilities.

• Perform all aspects of turfgrass maintenance, including mowing, edging, trimming, blowing, and weed control in lawn and landscape areas.
• Maintain pathways, walkways, patios, and other hardscape surfaces through blowing, sweeping, weeding, and general upkeep.
• Remove leaves, debris, litter, and other materials from gardens, pathways, sidewalks, parking lots, and public spaces.
• Assist with routine horticultural and landscape maintenance activities, including planting, watering, pruning, mulching, fertilizing, and seasonal garden improvements.
• Operate and maintain landscape equipment and tools, including lawnmowers, edgers, string trimmers, blowers, tillers, chainsaws, and other equipment in a safe and effective manner.
• Conduct routine inspections of equipment and tools; report maintenance needs and assist with inventory management to ensure equipment remains safe, operational, and properly maintained in coordination with the Facilities & Maintenance team.
• Assist with the monitoring, troubleshooting, maintenance, and minor repair of irrigation systems to support healthy plant growth and efficient water management.
• Observe and report plant health concerns, irrigation issues, pest activity, safety hazards, and maintenance needs.
• Collaborate with Garden staff and other departments to ensure grounds and landscape areas are properly maintained and prepared for public programs, educational activities, special events, rentals, and daily visitor operations.
• Support event setup and breakdown activities as needed.
• Follow all applicable safety procedures, workplace policies, and operational guidelines.
• Maintain a professional, respectful, and collaborative working relationship with visitors, volunteers, vendors, and fellow team members.
• Perform other duties and special projects as assigned to support the overall operation, appearance, and mission of Sherman Library & Gardens.

• Adhere to all Sherman Library & Gardens policies, procedures, safety standards, and ethical guidelines.
• Consistently use required personal protective equipment (PPE) and follow safe work practices.
• Comply with all federal, state, and local regulations related to workplace safety and environmental stewardship.
• Report workplace injuries, unsafe conditions, equipment concerns, and incidents promptly to management.

Required Qualifications

• High school diploma, GED, or equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience.
• Minimum of two (2) years of paid experience in landscape maintenance, groundskeeping, horticulture, gardening, turfgrass maintenance, or a related field.
• Working knowledge of turfgrass care, landscape maintenance practices, plant care, and general horticultural techniques.
• Ability to safely operate and maintain landscape equipment, power tools, and hand tools commonly used in grounds and garden maintenance.
• Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and effectively contribute as part of a team.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining high-quality grounds and garden presentation standards.
• Ability to perform physically demanding outdoor work for extended periods in varying weather and environmental conditions, including heat, cold, rain, humidity, dust, pollen, and uneven terrain.
• Ability to regularly stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, climb, reach, and perform repetitive physical tasks.
• Ability to safely lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation.
• Availability to work a flexible schedule, including either Saturday or Sunday on a regular basis.
• Reliable transportation and dependable attendance.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience working in a botanical garden, public garden, arboretum, historic property, park, museum campus, resort, golf course, or similar visitor-focused environment.
• Experience with irrigation system maintenance, troubleshooting, and minor repairs.
• Knowledge of Southern California plant materials, irrigation practices, and water conservation techniques.
• Familiarity with safe equipment maintenance procedures and inventory management practices.
• Bilingual communication skills are a plus but not required.

California Pay Transparency Notice

Compensation for this position will be provided in accordance with applicable California pay transparency requirements. Final compensation will be based on factors including experience, qualifications, skills, and internal equity.

Pay: $18.50 per hour
