Job Description

A Tree Crew Leader (or Arborist Crew Leader) is a skilled field supervisor responsible for managing a team of arborists and ground workers to safely execute tree care operations. This role combines advanced technical arboriculture—such as climbing and precision felling—with operational leadership and client relations.

  • Team Leadership: Direct daily operations for a crew (typically 2–5 people), assigning tasks based on individual skill levels and monitoring performance.
  • Safety Oversight: Enforce strict adherence to safety protocols (e.g., ANSI Z133 and OSHA standards), conduct pre-job hazard surveys, and ensure proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Technical Operations: Perform and supervise complex tree care, including:
  • Pruning, thinning, and removing hazardous trees.
  • Advanced rigging, cabling, and bracing.
  • Operating heavy machinery like bucket trucks, chippers, and stump grinders.
  • Site Management: Plan daily work layouts considering weather, equipment availability, and site obstacles.
  • Customer Relations: Act as the primary point of contact for clients on-site to clarify work orders, address concerns, and ensure final satisfaction.
  • Mentorship: Train and mentor junior crew members in climbing techniques, equipment maintenance, and tree identification.
  • Administrative Tasks: Complete daily activity reports, work orders, and equipment maintenance logs.

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience: Typically 3+ years of professional tree climbing and arboriculture experience.
  • Certifications:
  • ISA Certified Arborist (often required or highly preferred).
  • Valid Driver’s License; often a Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is required for driving heavy trucks.
  • First Aid/CPR certification.
  • Physical Demands: Ability to lift up to 50–100 lbs, climb trees at significant heights, and work outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Technical Knowledge: Proficiency in tree biology, disease identification, and proper knot-tying and rigging methods.

Typical Work Environment

Crew leaders work primarily outdoors, often in high-risk environments near electrical lines, moving traffic, or at heights up to 100 feet. Emergency storm response may require working extended or irregular hours.
