Beautification/Landscape Laborer

GENERAL PURPOSE

The Beautification/Landscape Laborer is responsible for the appearance and maintenance of entryways and public green spaces in the City of Ocean Springs.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

May provide assistance in the supervision of seasonal and/or temporary laborers.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under the supervision of the Beautification/Landscape Supervisor and under the general supervision of the Public Works Director.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Assists in the daily operations of the beautification and landscaped areas within the City of Ocean Springs.
• Maintains maintenance of all landscaped areas including installation of plants, flowers, shrubbery, trees, mulch and other items to beautify the City.
• Must possess the ability to safely use gardening hand tools and equipment including chainsaws, mowers, hedgers, augers, and tool sharpening equipment.
• May provide training to the seasonal laborers in the proper and safe use of hand tools and mechanical equipment necessary for the performance of the assigned duties.
• Plans, prioritizes and implements work schedules.
• Completes the necessary paperwork such as work orders.
• Maintains assigned equipment and notifies supervisor of repair needs.

REQUIRED EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

A high school graduate or its equivalent. Experience in a manual labor position directly related to outside activities or an equivalent combination of education and experience that results in the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is required.

NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

• Working knowledge of trees, shrubs, annual plantings.
• Functions and proper care of tools, equipment, and materials used in landscape maintenance work.
• Theories and practices of landscape planning and design.
• Principles and practices of landscape management, horticulture and landscaping.
